Easy tips that are affordable and quick to pull of.

The fall season is here. Supermarkets are stocking up on pumpkin spice everything, and some are already teasing us with gingerbread cookies for this year’s Christmas. But before you take out your Christmas lights and start visualising your Christmas tree, there’s thankfully still some time to enjoy this season.

As the temperatures get cooler and the greens outside start turning into shades of orange, brown and gold, your home can become a cozy place to spend those darker evenings.

Creating an elegant fall home doesn’t mean filling every surface with seasonal decorations. A few thoughtful details can completely change the mood without adding knick-knacks that will end up collecting dust. Here are some simple fall decor ideas to make your home feel warm, cozy and seasonal while still keeping it elegant.

Set the Mood With Scent

A home that looks like fall is lovely, but when it smells like fall too, the whole space feels that much more inviting. Scent can instantly transport you into the season, whether it’s cinnamon, baked apples, cedar wood or something warm and spicy simmering on the stove.

Candles are the easiest place to start. Warm woody, amber, pumpkin and slightly spicy scents work particularly well at this time of year.

Aside from candles, you can of course get your baking skills back on and let your oven do the work. The smell of freshly baked banana cinnamon bread, apple pie or pumpkin pie can instantly fill your home with that cozy fall feeling, especially when the kitchen is warm from the oven and the air smells sweet, spiced and comforting.

Bring Fall Into the Kitchen

Fall is when hearty, warm meals finally make their way back onto the menu. Creamy pumpkin soup, roasted vegetables, stews and freshly baked cakes taste even better when it’s cold and dark outside.

This is also where you can have a little fun with seasonal kitchen pieces. I personally love Le Creuset, they make pumpkin-shaped cast iron cookware that feels playful but still elegant enough to keep on display – even after fall.

You don’t need an entire collection of fall-themed kitchenware. One unusual piece can already bring a little bit of the season into the room.

Display Seasonal Fruit and Vegetables

Some of the best fall decor isn’t really decor at all. A fresh display of seasonal produce is easy to pull off and instantly adds warmth and color to your kitchen. Place a natural woven basket or beautiful bowl on your counter and fill it with apples, pears, squash, pumpkins or whatever is in season. A trip to the farmers market might have more exciting produce than your local supermarket!

The colors already do most of the work for you, and unlike decorative objects, everything eventually gets eaten. A natural rattan bowl like this one works throughout the year and can simply be restyled depending on the season.

Look Beyond the Classic Orange Pumpkin

Of course, it wouldn’t be fall without at least a few pumpkins. But you don’t have to rely solely on the huge bright orange Halloween ones. There are so many beautiful pumpkins in muted green, creamy white, pale yellow and dusty orange, often in strange shapes that are far more interesting.

Mixing different sizes, colors and textures also makes the display feel more natural and less like something you picked up from a seasonal decor aisle. Place a few on a kitchen counter, next to a vase, along a dining table or casually on a sideboard.

It’s Time for Cozy Lighting

Big, bright lights can quickly give off the vibe of a hospital. Personally, I enjoy soft and dim lighting throughout the entire year, but it becomes even more important once fall arrives.

Lighting is such an underestimated part of decorating because it literally changes how everything else in the room looks. The vibe, color, everything changes.  All the beautiful fall decor in the world won’t feel particularly cozy if you shine harsh white overhead lighting on it.

You don’t have to swap out your lamps either. Smart light bulbs can fit into many of the lamps you already own and allow you to adjust the warmth and brightness through an app.

And rather than relying on one big light in the middle of the room, try having several smaller sources of light. A table lamp on a console, a lamp beside the sofa, a small light in the kitchen and a few candles immediately make a room feel softer.

Warm lighting also brings out the deeper browns, rusts, woods and natural textures that work so beautifully in fall.

Bring in Fall Through Texture and Tone

I love seasonal decor, but I hate the wastefulness that often comes with it. You can easily walk into any home department store and pick up ten fall-themed pieces, enjoy them for a few weeks and then put them back into a box for the rest of the year.

A more thoughtful approach is to use pieces that already work throughout your home and simply restyle them with the season. An earthy-toned vase, for example, can be filled with warm-colored flowers, branches or dried foliage in fall and then refreshed again for spring or summer.

Look for shades like deep red, burnt orange, burgundy, brown and muted yellow. You can also cut a few branches from the garden or pick up seasonal foliage from a florist. It’s more sustainable and keeps the home feeling seasonal without making it overly themed.

Style a Fall Table

Whether you’re eating by yourself, with your partner or having friends over, a table with a few thoughtful accents can go a long way.

You can use the fruit and vegetables you already have and layer them loosely across the table. Pears, apples, grapes, figs, and small pumpkins can all add color and texture without feeling overly decorated.

I also love the idea of using small pumpkins as candle holders. It feels playful but can still look elegant if you keep the rest of the table simple.

Add a few taper candles, linen napkins and natural ceramics and the whole setup instantly feels warmer and more considered. You can also skip the traditional centerpiece altogether. A few branches in a low vase, scattered seasonal fruit and several candles usually look much more relaxed than one large arrangement in the middle of the table.

And the nice thing is that almost everything can be reused, eaten or restyled later.

Keep it Simple and Sustainable

The most elegant fall decor isn’t the most obvious.

You don’t need pumpkins on every surface or a cupboard full of decorations that only come out for six weeks of the year. Fall can come through in much smaller ways: warmer lighting, earthy colors, seasonal food, beautiful branches, richer textiles and a few interesting pumpkins here and there.

Use what you already have, bring in a few natural elements and focus on how you want your home to feel.

In the end, the best part of fall isn’t the decorations. It’s coming home when it’s chilly outside, turning on a few warm lamps, making something good to eat and having a space that feels cozy to be in.
